Joel Estes, for whom Estes Park, Colorado, is named, was born in the state of Kentucky around the early 1800’s. One fall day he and his son were out hunting game when they found themselves overlooking the most beautiful valley the father had ever seen and decided that was going to be his new home. In 1860 the Joel Estes family moved to the area now bearing his name. The Estes family lived in the valley for about 6 years and after many hard winters they sold their land and cabin to owners which would turn their cabin into a hotel for his friends and family. While Estes Park is quite often confused with being part of the Rocky Mountain National Park it is the gateway to the park.

Late winter early spring in Colorado is always a guessing game with the weather isn’t it? But that is why we love it here, you can have at least 2 seasons in just one day! We have noticed that 2 of our bull elk that lounge around the property on a regular basis have already dropped their antlers! We were surprised because it seems a little early for that to happen. They have also been shedding their winter coats, you can find little clumps of elk hair around the property where they stand and scratch. JilLayne is anxiously awaiting the return of the hundreds of hummingbirds that call Wildwood Inn their home for the summer. We should see the first arrivals in about a month! We will keep you posted! And just a reminder if you have not made your plans for Spring Break give us a call so we can help you plan a getaway to Estes! And of course it is never too early to start making your summer reservations too!

After our wonderful snowstorm, the weather has calmed down and is very nice and sunny. There is still snow on the ground, it is melting slowly which is good, so the ground can soak up some much needed moisture. Just a reminder that it is not too early to start making those get away plans for spring break! Instead of dealing with the traffic and crowds at some of the larger ski resorts, come to the peace and quiet of snowshoeing, sledding, cross country skiing or hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. Then relaxing in a private hot tub suite and maybe getting a facial or massage to really indulge yourself! Give us a call or go directly to our website for more details and booking.

Even though the temperatures say wintertime, it is never too early to plan for the upcoming Spring Break times or just for that long needed getaway.. We have had guests tell us the snowshoeing around Bear Lake in the park is wonderful. The weather has been quite nice the past week or so and from the forecast it will continue with a bit of fresh snow here and there. The Big Horn Sheep have been down just about every day for the past week, it is so nice to see them! Our little deer family has been hanging out for the past few days too. And of course our Bull Elk have been ever present. Please give us a call or email so we can help you plan some time in Estes Park……..

Well, the cold snap we had seems to have moved along, and the temperature has warmed up a bit! We are hoping that the below zero temperatures we had will help eradicate the pine beetles. The elk, deer and bighorn sheep have all been down this week to visit us. And Red Girl, our resident fox has been by every day. She is always carrying some thing in her mouth so I know she has been out on a successful hunt.
Just a reminder that Valentines is coming up really fast, so if you have not made your reservations, call us, as we are getting booked up for the weekends of the 11th and the 18th! Do not miss out on having a great weekend in the mountains!!!
